Walter “Bud” Slatkin has been practicing law since 1970. For the past 20 years his practice has emphasized real estate and business matters.
Mr. Slatkin is a Colorado native. Mr. Slatkin attended the Denver Public Schools, University of Redlands in California and received a B.A. from the University of Colorado. In 1970 Mr. Slatkin received a J.D. from the University of Colorado. While in law school, Mr. Slatkin participated in creating and editing a real estate textbook authored by Professor Norton Steuben. Mr. Slatkin also worked for the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, participating in criminal trials and drafting briefs submitted to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Slatkin is admitted to practice before the Colorado Supreme Court; United States District Court for the District of Colorado and the United States Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Currently, Mr. Slatkin is primarily involved in office practice; however, his early years were also spent in the courtroom. In the case of Russell v. First American Mortgage Company, Mr. Slatkin was successful in establishing the duty and liability of the lender with respect to making representations to a borrower concerning a loan commitment. In the early 80s, in Coale v. Dow Chemical Company, Mr. Slatkin won a million dollar judgment on behalf of the owners of a prize bull that was sterilized by a mislabeled insecticide. The facts of that case were used in a television episode of “L.A. Law.”
Mr. Slatkin’s current practice involves the representation of owners, buyers, sellers, developers and lenders involved in real estate and the representation of business and corporate clients involved in both real estate and other business activities, including computer software and micro-nutrient supplements. Mr. Slatkin’s practice expands beyond the State of Colorado and frequently includes multi-national corporations.
Mr. Slatkin:
- developed the documents for the first condominium conversion project in the City & County of Denver;
- has drafted complex legal documents, including those for timber sales agreements involving thousands of acres of timber;
- did the legal work for the acquisition (through foreclosure for a lender) of a hotel in Aspen, Colorado and, following foreclosure, the sale of the hotel;
- handled the sale of an office building in Los Angeles, California;
- did the legal work for tax-free exchanges involving elderly care campuses in Arizona and Colorado and multiple Colorado commercial properties.
Mr. Slatkin is active in the Denver and Colorado Bar Associations. He is the past chairman of the Law Office Management Committee and a member of the Legal Fee Arbitration Committee. Mr. Slatkin annually revises the Ethics section of The Practitioner’s Guide to Colorado Business Organizations.
Mr. Slatkin was chairman of the University of Denver Institute for Interfaith Studies; President of a statewide Jewish student campus support organization and board member of numerous community organizations; and is actively involved, on the local and state level, with high school students who are members of DECA, an organization that helps students excel in the areas of marketing, management, finance and hospitality careers.
Mr. Slatkin is married and has four children, all of whom provide his most important challenges.
